Greetings Fall Foliage Peepers

Today I'm finishing up the drive that I started a few weeks back. (Ok, so it was last year).

As you may remember I was out on the 29th of September 08 and up into the Sugar Hill region of NH and it was a rainy, not so nice day. I also mentioned to you that if you don't keep at it and keep taking pictures you might miss something (read on). Well I had left route 117 and had headed north on 116 when two events happened. The sun broke out from behind the clouds and a pond (coffin pond) came into view with Garnet Hill beyond it (photo #1 ) and it was as gorgeous a peak shot as I've seen. It's right at the crook of Streeter pond rd on the west side of 116. After that I continued up 116 to 302 and headed into Bethlehem.

(Starting at this point on 302 you are on the White Mtn. Scenic byway although I didn't know it. (This section of 302 comprises the byway and more on this next week), I then headed south on 142 noting several small motels that had gone out of business but I did find a small restaurant that had a beautiful stone wall and an orange maple next to it (photo#2).

As I hit route 18 I looked through my windshield at a great hill in color but what made it better was the dramatic clouds over it (photo#3). I stopped Artists Bluff and then Echo Lake in the big parking lot in the shadow of Cannon Mtn. (photo #4 & 5) As I headed from the lake edge into the parking lot I suddenly was bathed in the late afternoon sun and as I turned around I could see the sun was streaming in low over the sides of Cannon Mtn. (photo #6)

After this I got on 93 and headed down to 112 and the Kanc. I got on the Kanc and headed to Conway but first I stopped at the Lily pond to catch a few shots with about 20 other folks. (photo #7 & 8) After this the clouds were getting thicker and the light faded and so ends my story for today.

This finishes my trip report for the 29th of Sept 2008. As you can see that even if you have a rainy day you can still get very nice pictures and if you are ready and the sun comes out it will make for spectacular photos:-)

Thanks for the great photos and comments, Jeff. Some of my most awesome moments taking photos have been when I had no expectations in less than ideal conditions and then "out of the blue" to get something like you did-----what a thrill!

Thanks Theresa, I just want everyone to know that even though Mother Nature tosses some lemons your way in the way of rainy weather Ok.. maybe not a downpour but lets say on again off again misty kinds of weather or just a plain cloudy day. That you should still get out there and take some pictures. If you have a polarizer filter all the better because if there is rain drops on the leaves it will help make the colors pop. Does it beat a sunny day nah.. I won't kid you, I love being up early in the morning or out at 3-5PM (The golden hours for photography of all kinds year round).
I just want everyone to get out and get pictures they are happy with...

And just so everyone knows I used a ND grad filter on the top picture to darken the clouds and for each of the ones below it, I moved them into my image editing program and raised the black point slider which makes the background darker colors darker and results in the brighter colors red and orange really standing out. I don't like raising the saturation like most folks will do because it makes the colors way too saturated and it looks like it's fake... (which it is at that point) I hope this helps...
