Travel report:
Oct 18th (Sunday)

If you're following the Yankee Foliage website or the Yankee foliage Facebook fan page then you are seeing some wonderful fall foliage shots. Also you can participate with the fans or forum members in talking about the search for fall foliage color and things to do in New England.

A few weeks back, I was talking to Kelly Bryer of the Lakes Region Association and she arranged a stay for me at the Church Landing at Mill Falls while I was foliage searching for two days in the Lake Winnipesaukee area. This meant I didn't have to figure out where to stay. One obstacle down.

I had been driving up the eastern side of the lake all day when I finally stopped at Church Landing to check in. I soon entered my room and the first thing I did was to open the porch door to take in the impressive view of the lake. In looking down I saw some Adirondack chairs placed under a sugar maple (I always approve of this) and I made a mental note to photograph this later.

I came inside to warm up a bit by the gas fireplace and sat on the overstuffed couch which was almost a fatal error. I shook myself awake reminding myself that there was time to sleep later.

The suite had many points of interest such as a cushion festooned bay window seat that looked like Lisa would love to curl up on a rainy day with a book and never move again. The bedroom was separate and quietly calling for me to settle in but I still had more photography in the area so I didn't dare touch the bed.

I started up my laptop to check emails and quickly hooked into the wireless signal that surrounds the hotel (to include the grounds outside). My wife and I had enjoyed a dinner with friends in the Lakeside grille and lounge so I knew that the meals there are hearty and hoped to have time to taste another.

I wandered around the hotel and sat by the fireplace in the lobby for a few minutes trying very hard not to get too comfortable. I returned that evening with my wife, Lisa and when she saw the room she just asked "if we could move in permanently"? She of course loved the wood decor and the added accents of birch branches and bark throughout the building to include the rooms and even a tall branch climbing up one wall in the bathroom (Which I should note is bigger than our bedroom at home).

I will note that the light continental breakfast was a little lighter than I would have thought for such a high quality hotel but I didn't have trouble filling up on the apple cinnamon butter on my toast (homemade I think).

We hated to check out in the morning but a bride was due in a few hours so we regretfully left the hotel to have lunch at Hart's Turkey Farm restaurant just up the street.

More on this later...
