Fall Foliage Events around New England
Fall trips, Fairs and more
by Jeff "Foliage" Folger
Greetings Fall Foliage Peepers
Most of you have received your fall issues by now and have seen that Yankee did a story on me there (I hope they don't go out of business now or it will be my fault!) :-) I'm getting daily emails and advertisements for everything fall related from tours to fairs and I'm going to try to list a few as we go forward into September.
Today's Salem Times opened with two local farms hosting their own corn mazes. Marini family farm in Ipswich will be hosting theirs again this year and this year they brought in Maize Quest (from PA) to design their maze. Over in Danvers the Connor's Farm has created a Family guy themed maze. Both open on Sept 12th and this year they both will be charging a small admission fee. Here's more corn maze locations from Yankee.
Fall Fairs... There are many all through New England and many highlight Fall Foliage as their main focus but not all. Some emphasize farm products and arts and crafts but the one thing they have in common (besides the food..) is FUN! So first up is:
*The Big E (touted to be the largest on the east coast) Sept 18 - Oct *
The Fryeburg Fair Oct 4 - Oct 11 *
The Topsfield fair Oct 2 - Oct 12 *
Old Deerfield Fall Craft Fair 22-23 September Fall Festivals (centered around celebrating Fall Foliage)
*The Warner Fall Festival 9 Oct - 11 Oct
*The North East Kingdom Fall Festival 27 Sept - 3 Oct
*The Sandwich NH Fall Festival 10-12 Oct
I'm not even coming close to 1% of the fairs and festivals that go on at this time of year. I will try to put more up as I get a chance and you can always check Yankee's list in the magazine and on the website for monthly listings.
If you feel it would help to have a giant listing with all the links leave me a comment here and maybe I can compile a big bunch of them. But I need overwhelming comments to go to all that effort. So let me know!
I think everyone is waiting to see what everybody else is guessing for my Contest!
Remember, I will not consider any guess that comes in after midnight on Halloween. Whatever time is posted on the post determines if your guess makes it in time.
Also I'm going to add a 2nd prize! I just purchased a beautiful Fall Foliage DVD titled Fall Foliage in New England.
The idea is to guess how many miles I drive in looking for fall foliage between mid September and 31 October (in the search for Foliage). You can put a guess in the comments below or in the forum or email me direct at jeff.foliage@gmail.com. Remember you can always go to the forums on the Yankee Magazine website and click on the forums then go to the foliage forum and look for Jeff's contest 2009... Or you can just click here to go direct? but the scenic route is more fun..
Did you know that Yankee is up on Facebook and Twitter! Well click on the links and you can get your updates all year long!
Yankee's Foliage Fan page on Facebook and Yankee on Twitter.
Autumn is getting close (23 days) and I hope to hear from you during what's left of the summer that we have and if you have any questions please feel free to ask them here in the comments section or over in the foliage forum and I and the other forum members will do their best to answer them

Real cute photo of your grandkids. The one of the wagon looks like the display that's on the village green in Danville... is that where that was taken? Sure wish I was going to get to make some of those festivals this year. We were in Peacham one year during the North East Kingdom Fall Festival and they gave us free HOMEMADE cookies, apples and hot cider... pretty neat. I love pumpkin people... have you ever seen the ones between Waitsfield and Warren on Rt. 100 in Vermont? They have a contest also and they are usually some really neat ones... even a nativity scene with pumpkin people at a church.

Nope, I haven't seen the one on 100 but I still have so many places to see and visit... I hope to send a virtual cookie from Peacham on the first of Oct but Lisa and I are heading out for VT on the 2nd so I may have to rethink that... The wagon was at the Topsfield fair a few years back. I don't know if I'll make the fairs this year but I always have high hopes...

Well, I didn't want to appear completely computer-ignorant (although I am), so before coming right out and asking you, I put "what is a virtual cookie" in Google and goodness gracious, I still don't know... couldn't make much sense out of the answers. So I guess I'm going to have to let the whole world know just how little I know about all this stuff and ask you. My kids have had to pull me kicking and screaming into every phrase of these modern gadgets and I have no idea what all these terms mean. I'm don't even understand the "Computer for Dummies" books (lol). I just know that if it's anything from or to do with Peacham, I'll be interested. So please explain what it is that you're going to be sending from there. Thanks. "Inquiring minds want to know." lol

Well I didn't mean it as in cookies left on your computer from your internet travels.. I meant I would take a picture of a cookie in my travels and post it for you.... much easier... :-)

Oh gee, I guess I didn't take you literal enough, huh. lol Since I don't know anything, I thought it might be some kind of computer technical stuff. I was trying to make it too difficult when all you said was that you'd send a cookie from Peacham. :) Well, if you get up there, I'll be looking for that cookie. How about some hot cider to go with it. :) Oh my goodness... doesn't that sound wonderful to be setting in the back of the cemetery gazing out at that view with a cookie and hot cider on a cool, crisp fall day.

I just had the thought that maybe I had better clarify that last statement before someone thinks I'm really ghoulish and like to spend my time hanging out in the cemetery. lol The view from the back of the Peacham cemetery out over the countryside is an extremely lovely view. It's one we go back to every fall and love to photograph also. So y'all go take a look and see what I mean. Jeff and Kathy and Tyler know of what I speak. :)

Visting from California. Will be leaving from Boston going to Quebec(Oct 11, 12) via Freeport Maine. Return trip to Boston Oct 17. Am a digital photographer with moderate experience--give me some ideas (I'll have a car), but I know reservations will be hard.

Well Ron by these dates the color will be moving south and not north so while you will see some great color it will be fading the further north you head until you hit Quebec. It peaks there near the end of Sept and is gone by early Oct.(Usually) Depending on the reason for heading to Quebec you will see a beautiful city with lots to do. But the color will be past peak there... (should be) As you head south into NH or Maine you will pick up color in the mid to southern regions of ME,NH,VT. and should find peak in MA/CT/RI.. (usually) Check into the foliage forum and we can answer your questions faster there.. Jeff Foliage
