A tease of color in the NEK & Maine color report!!
Color right on schedule? (I think?)
by Jeff "Foliage" Folger
I stopped at a barn on the Peacham rd and shot this maple that was teasing with what is to come..
Greetings foliage seekers!
Color report from the Moosehead Lake region:
Heather of The Cozy Moose Lakeside Cabins
Hi Jeff,
There has been a change in color over the past week. Sections in the mountains had a light frost 2 days in a row. You can now see hints of colors in the mountain landscapes off in a distance. Colors seem to pop out at you along the road -- reds, oranges, yellows against the greens. 10-20% - Vibrant colors - very little leaf loss

This is part 1 of a two part story .... Here we are! Almost into the fall color season and Lisa and I just wrapped up a trip that took us up from Salem to the Northeast Kingdom (NEK) and over to the North West Corner (NWC) of Vermont and then home again.
For those worrying about your plans and all the talk of early color and if you read both parts of this story you will get my (current) expectations for this fall season.
We left on Thursday morning and had sun all day. The first part of the trip was uneventful and no real color to report. There were the usual trees that are stressed from having their feet in water or for other reasons that have turned early and their color is usually a dark red which doesn't really thrill me. (but color is color)
Our goal for day 1, was the NEK. Our route was I-95 to I-93 north. We traveled across NH until we picked up I-89 and we then took I-91 north until route 302 west.
We followed 302 to the out skirts of Groton and then made a right onto Minard road. This road was very quiet and as we traveled towards Peacham we noticed that the color was increasing and teasing us as we turned each corner. I will honestly say that there is not enough color to satisfy a foliage seeker, as of right now. I also think that by the last weekend in Sept, the color in the NEK will be either at or approaching peak.
We pulled into Peacham and went to the Peacham store and found Karen (the owner of the store and bed & breakfast) manning the register. We talked about the color and the weather. She said some folks had reported frost but she said she hadn't see any.
We traveled around town a bit and I took some photos to show the current color. We then headed out on the Peacham road until we picked up route 2 and then headed north on 15 toward Hardwick.
On Route 15 just past Hardwick but not into Wolcott is the Fisher Covered Bridge. This was one of the last covered rail bridges and the sign was written while it was still in operation based on its verbiage. This ends the first days notes and I'll pick up with our dangerous journey in the next installment
I'd like to hear your thoughts on this and any other subjects in either the comments section or over in the foliage forum.
