Greetings foliage seekers!
Continuing my exploration of New Salem MA. (NOT the witch city)!
I parked the car up the hill near the town common. I got out and started to circle the common (not very big) and started to look at different angles on all the various buildings. If you don't see a good composition, don't get discouraged, just move your feet. If you keep your eyes open, you should find a good angle to photograph the building.
It's so easy at this time of year to just photograph a tree for just the color it's reflecting to you and I'll admit that I do this myself. But the shots that get the real ohhs and ahhhs are the ones that have a strong subject and there are lines drawing your eyes into the subject. Also framing your subject in between some branches and the ground keeps your eyes in the picture and focuses your attention...
Anyway They have a school there that had a squirrel for a weather vane and the stone building was a much different style than the wood clapboard buildings that filled the rest of the common. I love older buildings and often will compose a shot with an old window or the side of a building framed by colorful branches.
I had trouble finding a good angle on the church in town and walked up and down the sidewalk looking up at the steeple and trying to find a view that would frame it with leaves and allow me to have both.
Check out the shots on the right and let me know how I did.
It was soon time to leave and we headed out from our first visit to New Salem Center and I'll add this one to my list of places to come back and visit.
I hope you are enjoying reading my blog and if you have questions please leave a comment here or sign in on the foliage users forum and the group and we will do our best to help out.
